BULL FIGHTING GAME

OVERVIEW

The island of Pemba is famed for its traditional sport of bull fighting. Unlike its Spanish counterpart, this sport does not involve killing the bulls, but is a hangover from the days of Portuguese rule in the 16th and 17th centuries. The tradition, as it is practiced today, involves professional toreros (also called toreadors) who execute various formal moves which can be interpreted and innovated according to the bullfighter's style or school.

There is no particular time for bull fighting, although the hottest time of the year between July and February appears to be the favoured season. The most common bull fighting points on the island of Pemba are Kojani Island, Kangagani, and Chuale villages. The villages are among the places where Portuguese left their living evidence in the late 16th and the beginning of 17th Centuries before the coming of the Arab rulers from Oman.
